The Green

Download Case Study

Brief
L’atelier were instructed by Easter Group to provide on-construction Energy Performance Certificates for a 46,000 sq ft office village in West Berkshire.

Project Description
The Green at Aldermaston comprises four buildings holding a total of eleven air-conditioned office units ranging in size from 200m2 to 750m2.

The buildings are heated and cooled using a pioneering ground source heat pump system. This renewable energy source is complemented by a very low energy lighting system which features automatic light level control and occupancy sensing. The buildings are naturally ventilated.

This was the first ground source heat pump the L’atelier team had encountered & although we braced ourselves for all varieties of complications, our expert team of modellers rose to the challenge & the work was completed on time and to budget.

The buildings were modelled using SBEM software from the architect’s drawings with additional data provided by Atelier Ten, the environmental engineers for the project.

The resulting EPCs were produced within two weeks of receiving the instruction, with all buildings achieving a ‘B’ rating. The average CO2 emission rate of these buildings was 39 kgCO2/m² per year, almost half the minimum emission rate for new buildings as set out in Part L of the Building Regulations (71.7).

"Since the introduction of the EPC legislation we have worked closely with L’Atelier on all of our developments. They have provided an excellent service guiding us through the process and delivering the certifications promptly. The ratings achieved have also demonstrated that our approach to sustainability has been beneficial to our projects."
