Brief
L’atelier were instructed to produce an Energy Performance Certificate for a residential care home of
approx. 600 m², situated in West Sussex.
Project Description
Greystoke Manor is a complex multi-level site including a ground and first floor, some parts of the building
have a second floor but this is not consistent throughout. There is also a basement but only under the
main entrance lobby
Constructed in the 1880s, Greystoke Manor has undergone much extension to the outside structure. The
first, in 1992, added 3 bedrooms to the ground floor, each with en-suite facilities. The second, in 1996,
added a further 6 new bedrooms to the first floor, also with en-suite facilities. This made it more compli-
cated to produce the EPC as we had to take into account the various versions of Building Regulations that
had been used during the extensions.
The building was modelled in Design Builder, a piece of software designed to create an EPC based on a 3D
model and survey data entered by the user. The finished product will look similar to the picture below (left).
Design Builder, however, doesn't need to know of any unheated external space, for example, porches as
circled below, as they have no thermal characteristics. These are therefore left out of the model but can be
added as a visual representative if required. They will have no effect on the overall rating.
